When Life Imitates Art
Posted by: Alex on April 16, 2012Last week, I told my Father about AYNiB. Even though he has always been super supportive of all of my crazy ideas I could hear him struggling with completely understanding what the hell I was going on about.
I guess explaining new media to a 67-year-old Dutchman is not the easiest thing in the world and when I came across this video I realized that I am probably not alone in explaining our culture to the non-initiated. Though my conversation did not end with me drooling on the floor. However, I would be lying if I said I did not attempt to imitate what Dubstep sounds like.
And now allow me to present today’s episode of “Masterbass Theater”.
Me: So, I have some exciting news!
Dad: Really? Let me guess, you and Heather won a trip to China
Me: No – not even close, why would you even think that’s what it was?
Dad: I don’t know, I just had Dim Sum, so I though maybe you were going to China
Me: No, we aren’t going to China. Though its good to know that you base your guesses on what you’ve had for lunch
Dad: So, what is your news?
Me: Me, Heather, Scott and Dee are starting a website
Dad: Oh ya? You had better make sure they blur out your face.
Me: Jesus Christ Dad, thanks – and for the record I don’t think anyone wants to see me on that kind of website.
Dad: Don’t be so serious all the time
Me: Serious? I am hardly serious
Dad: You’re sounding pretty serious right now
Me: Do you want to know or not?
Dad: You were saying you are starting a website – what sort of website is it going to be then?
Me: It’ll mostly be about the Bass Music culture
Dad: What is that?
Me: Like Drum and Bass and Dubstep music…
Dad:….
Me: You don’t know what I’m talking about do you?
Dad: No, I don’t. Do you mean the stuff you go listen to at the Sham-blah-blah?
Me: Yes, and it’s Shambhala
Dad: Whatever, I call it Sham-blah-blah. Have I ever heard, what did you call it – dubstep?
Me: Um, I don’t know… maybe over Christmas or when you came out to visit us. It sort of goes “Woom, woom wooo wooom
Dad: Can you do that again?
Me: …
Dad: Jeeze, serious again!
Me: Ok, woom wooo woooha wooom woooo
Dad: You should go on the American Idol!
Me: Ha, thanks Dad – I’ll remember to thank you when I accept my Grammy
Dad: Well, good for you starting up the website. Next time you come out, you can show me how to dubstep again so when I tell my friends I can explain it too
I don’t know what I was expecting when I called to tell him about the website. Sometimes I forget that even though we know about Bass Culture, a 67 year old Dutchman might think that it’s a bit strange.
