Jersey Shore Killed the Video Star
April 16, 2012The music video has become something of a bit of an unappreciated art form. Videos like R/D’s Face of God Featuring Nadine Risha unfortunately have become something of rarity. Don’t get me wrong, there are still great innovators in this genre, but it seems like unless you are OK Go your video is doomed to semi-obscurity in the depths of Youtube or Vimeo.
Let me put something in to perspective for you. There were more people at the Gathering of the Juggalos last year, than have watched this amazing video. This is a band that doesn’t even understand how magnets work. Perhaps these anti-intellectuals should have spent more time watching Bill Nye and less time huffing face paint, but I digress.
Maybe the decline of the music video will be a good thing. If media corporations no longer feel that they can commodify it, it opens up the door to artists like Matthew F. Smith to create beautiful videos with music they love, and it puts the distribution in our hands. The old models of content distribution are dying, and hopefully Gym, Tan, and Laundry will be just an epitaph on their tomb stones.
