Motion Notion 2015
For those unfamiliar with Motion Notion, it’s one of Western Canada’s longest running electronic music festivals. Unfortunately in this day and age, when many people invested in electronic music culture think of a festival, they think of a plain jane big box stage packed full of “EDM” artists. This, is not what one will get at Motion Notion.
Always focusing on the visual aspect of the festival experience, Motion Notion has forever been a major contender amongst events showcasing visual artists as well producers and DJs. From square one, Katalyst events have always pushed the envelope through stage design, graphics and visuals. Motion Notion is Katalyst Event’s great display of pairing music and art for the ultimate festival experience.
We chatted with Motion Notion Festival Director Kevin Harper to find out what we can expect from this year’s Motion Notion. He walked us through some of the talent and workshops, and AllYouNeedisBass couldn’t be more excited for this year’s festivities! Here’s what he had to say:
Holy moly Kev! What year are we in here? Sweet 16?
Yea it’s crazy isn’t it? It’s so cool to see how far it’s come along over these past 16 years.
Motion Notion has come a loooooong way since square one, and with the hard work of the organizers it’s cemented itself as one of Canada’s premier festivals. Just curious, what have been some of the biggest milestones of the festival from your perspective?
I would say moving it to its current location was the biggest game changer for us. We’ve had several locations over the years, but Beaverfoot Lodge feels like we’re finally home. It lends itself to some pretty fantastic experiences, even including the drive to get out there. There’s definitely some magic in those mountains, so we’re really lucky to be able to create our playground of sound out there every year.
Inviting PK Sound and the Pyramidion/Spectrum crews to work with us on their respective stages would be another milestone we’re really thankful for. All their teams have brought a massive level of professionalism and creativity to the stages, and the collaboration between everyone to bring new experiences to our festival has been really amazing to watch develop over the last few years. This also led us to encourage renegade stages and art cars for the last few years, which has added another level of uniqueness each year. I’m blown away by all the creative people who come to our festival, and it makes what we all work for each year worth it when everything comes together in such a magical way.
If you were going to explain why someone should go to the festival that had never heard of Motion Notion before, what would you say to explain the magic to them?
Kev: Motion Notion is like going on an amazing adventure in an Avatar-like world – all in the beautiful Canadian Rocky Mountains. Ever wondered what it would be like to see a dancing robot next to massive fireballs shooting into a sky full of stars and lasers, all while listening to the most amazing music on the planet? That’s Motion Notion.
What are YOU most excited about for Motion Notion 2015?
Kev: Honestly, I can’t wait to dance like crazy to Noisia on Sunday night. One of the best musical experiences of my life was about 8 or 9 years ago when we last brought Noisia, and there was an absolutely epic storm like I’ve never seen before. It was 25 degrees out at 2am and had bathtub-temperature rain that turned the whole forest into a giant mud pit. Those of us who braved the rain were treated to the most insane set I’ve ever heard to date, all while being completely soaked from head to toe in rain and mud. It was at that time that I fully fell in love with both Drum and Bass and Motion Notion, and became a part of the festival the very next year because of it. I’ve wanted to bring Noisia back ever since that date, so I’m beyond excited to have them finally play for us again this year.
Can you walk us through some of this year’s special events?
One of the many events I’m really excited about is a new mini-party we’re hosting this year on The Temple on Sunday afternoon/evening called Justin Jay’s House Party. If you don’t know Justin, he’s one of the heavyweights on the massively successful house music label dirtybird, and we’ve got a huge six hour daytime house-themed party organized by Rhett B from Wolfcastle to bring this party to life. Bring out your fun side and come enjoy the beautiful warm mountain sun to some of the best house music on the planet for that one.
I know this is a hard one, but can you pick your top three sets?
Kev: I actually live in Sydney Australia all year before flying back for Motion Notion, so I’ve made it a big focus of mine to bring over some of the insanely talented Australian artists I’ve seen over to Canada for Motion Notion. One of those that I’ve been working for years to get is Shockone. That guy produced one of the best albums I’ve ever heard to date from any artist (Universus – go listen to it right now, seriously). We’re the only show he’s playing in North America this summer, so I’m extremely excited to hear what he brings to our crowd. Another Aussie I’m really pumped to see return is Doctor Werewolf. He absolutely destroyed it last year, and I’ve heard his new tunes are even crazier, so I’m looking forward to that one a lot. My third set to see (besides literally every other set – I seriously have no idea how I’m going to choose who to see) would be Infected Mushroom. Those guys are living legends in this business, and they put on some of the most epic performances out there right now. Expect big things from that one!
Are there any ticket contests going on?
No contests yet, but we always run some giveaways close to the festival, so keep checking our Facebook page for any goodies we may be giving away.
Anything else to add?
This is by far our best Motion Notion we’ve ever done, and we’re all extremely excited to show you what we’ve got in store for you. I’m sure you’ve all heard the same ‘this will be the best party ever’ speech from every event producer out there, but I can say with absolute confidence that you will love this festival. We can’t wait for you to experience it with us, so we hope you can all make it! You won’t regret it!
