HYHT: Jnana – Wanton Agency EP
Posted by: K. Lea on April 15, 2013Canadian producers from the West have been killing it in 2013. With guys like Defunk, Fat Pat, Neighbour, Subvert, Smalltown DJs, Knight Riderz Mark Instinct, and the whole Tenpin Records crew holding it down in all forms of bass, it’s no surprise Western Canada has spawned another Beatport chart climber. In this case, the one to watch (and listen to) is Calgary producer Jnana. His new EP Wanton Agency is a brand new foray into the sounds of West Coast glitch, and the sounds are superb.
“At the time I was writing my EP I was listening to a lot of West Coast psychedelic glitch hop, “ said Jnana. “I feel like in the past year or two there has been a huge explosion in the variety and style of mid-tempo bass music. The Headtron crew, An-Ten-Nae, Canadians like Nick Knight Riderz and Tantric Decks as well as lesser known acts like Yheti from San Francisco have been pushing an innovative style of heavy melodic bass music. While making Wanton Agency I tried to tap into the dynamic energy and different styles that are representative of mid-tempo bass music today from Calgary AB down to the Bay area.”
And tap in he does. My personal favourite on the EP is Govern Yourself, a track with vocalist and reggae soundboy Ouda Ouda. The EP has super sick productions all around, but this one stands out as the ultimate summer jam.
Currently available on Beatport only, Wanton Agency will be on sale at all the other regular retailers April 22.
