All You Need is BASS

HYHT: Bassnectar – Freestyle Mixtape

Now that the Turduken haze has finally worn off I needed something to kick-start my heart and start clearing out the gravy that seems to still be pumping through my veins. So, who better to get the job done than the giant of bass, Bassnectar!

Last week he released his Freestyle Mixtape as a preview of his upcoming EP (October 16th through Amorphous Music). These mixtapes are a great way for your average bass junky to check out what Bassnectar is doing without having to buy the EP.

I love this mixtape. There was so much good music that came out last week and I kept getting drawn back to this over and over again. Bassnectar is a pro at using gargantuan basslines to deliver an unbelievably eclectic sound. He generously spreads it across the entire mixtape and track after track he doesn’t disappoint!

Right out of the gate, he had me hooked. I have a massive soft spot for the beautifully bizarre Björk, and this sample from Larz Von Trier’s Dancer in the Dark sends chills up my spine. Through out the whole mixtape he has injected so many perfect elements. Whether it is the Amen Break at 3:22; some reggae at 11:11; or the immaculate voice of Mimi Page twice in the last half. This whole thing is a smasher!

Bassnectar’s Fall tour is now in full swing where he is crushing venues with Gramatik and Gladkill (Check out our interview with Gladkill HERE). We can’t wait to get our dose of bass on the 27th of October in Vancouver BC! So if you don’t already have your tickets you had better get a move on and click here!
